Multistate Registration Cost Calculator

Foreign qualification — registering your LLC to do business in a state other than the one it was formed in — is not one fee. It is a first-year bundle (filing, certificate of good standing from the home state, registered agent) followed by an annual obligation in every state you added, forever.

The ongoing number is the one that surprises people, because it grows with each state and never stops.

Do you actually have to register?

"Doing business" is defined by each state, and the line is not where most people assume. Having remote employees, an office, or inventory in a state generally crosses it. Selling into a state from elsewhere generally does not, on its own.

Registering where you do not need to costs money forever. Failing to register where you do means penalties and, in many states, losing the right to bring a lawsuit in that state's courts until you cure it.

The cheaper path

If the trigger is a single employee or a short project, look at whether payroll registration alone satisfies the state before qualifying the whole entity. It often does, and it is considerably cheaper to unwind.
